This pineapple passion fruit smoothie with strawberry is easy to make and makes a great afternoon refreshment drink. We also like to have this for a breakfast - it's a great way to get your 5 (fruit and veg) a day!
As always when using fresh fruit, the riper the the fruit, the better the flavour and end result. A ripe pineapple with have yellow skin and smell sweet and fragrant, with the flesh tender, sweet and juicy. I would not recommend using pineapple that is still green in the skin, as the flesh will be tough and acidic. A ripe passion fruit will have a wrinkled skin and be fragrant, sweet and juicy when sliced open. Ripe strawberries will also smell sweet and fragrant.
I love the tropical pineapple passion fruit blend - it is such a treat in the warm summer months and can allow you to imagine you're somewhere exotic even when you're not! The addition of strawberries adds a nice balance to the tartness of the pineapple and passion fruit.
I've swirled the strawberry into the pineapple passion fruit blend, as the contrasting colours look so pretty. :) The contrasting flavours are another reason to swirl in the strawberry separately - tasting the pineapple and passion fruit separately from the strawberry, but all in one mouthful, is a nice little surprise for the taste buds. You could, of course, blend all the fruits together into one uniform smoothie, whatever you like!
