Feeding your baby rice, a cereal grain that is packed with health benefits, as a regular part of his diet is a great way to vary his carbohydrate intake. Rice is a staple food in many parts of the world, particularly in Asia, and is great for providing fast and instant energy without causing a spike in blood sugar levels.
Rice is also naturally gluten-free, making it an obvious choice for those with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. It is generally considered a safe food to feed babies and small children because of its bland yet nutritious nature, providing an excellent source of vitamins and minerals.
For the older baby, rice offered as whole grains (rather than pureed or mashed), makes for a fun mealtime. Perhaps it’s the textured grains tickling their taste buds or the smallness of the individual grains that are not intimidating and easy to handle, but most children do love to eat rice!
Below is a selection of baby rice recipes that can be easily adapted for older children or the entire family. Different kinds of rice produce different textures when cooked, so feel free to experiment with rice varieties and be guided by what your baby likes.
Remember that it is best not to add any salt to baby’s food before the age of 1, so if you are cooking for older children or for the family, make sure you set aside baby’s portion first before seasoning.
